Review: Global’s Horo

Is Global’s Horo a contender for my worst figure ever or a pleasant surprise? She was definitely not a cheap buy and far from a recommended buy but lets see how she fared.

Global, normally a small garage kit outfit, has opted to ‘mass produce’ a pre-painted and assembled version of their Horo figure. I say mass produced but I assume she was only available in fairly limited quantities in a similar fashion to their other release, Horo (A Rest in the Forest Version) which was limited to 100 total produced. Surprisingly, Global’s Horo must have sold well enough for the group because after their first run in November ’09 they decided to re-release her in March ’10, and that’s the run that mine originates from. As well as she may have sold for Global, I don’t think I’ve seen a single picture of her, let alone a review and I appear to be the only owner of her on MFC. I imagine this is because I’m crazy.

Global’s Horo was contained within the most incredible box I’ve ever seen. The box was so incredibly plain that it almost disappeared into my white background never to be seen again. Fortunately it’s outline was visible and I was able to remove Horo from her position within. But lets focus back on this wonderful box and what was provided with Horo. On the front we can see they’ve used a portion of a picture by Sasaki Masashi, one of my favourite Horo pictues and one I’ve used as a wallpaper for seemingly ever now. In addition to ripping off this artwork, there’s some nice colourful shredded paper inside and a yellow handkerchief covering the figures base. Horo herself is sheathed in your average bubble wrap which seems to have done a sufficient job in her long trip from Japan to Canada. All in all the presentation was somewhat poor, but how does the figure stand up?

With the low key presentation of the box and items within it my expectations were lowered somewhat as I unwrapped Horo. First thing I noticed wasn’t how she looked but how she smelled, she smelled very much like the modelling paint you’d find at an art store. The next thing I noticed was how she felt, I kept thinking she had to be wood, she felt light and solid and unlike a PVC figure. This must be what a cold cast figure feels like, it’s definitely different. Following those observations all that was left was how her appearance struck me, and it did strike me. She’s like the girl you meet in a nightclub, under the seizure inducing flash of strobe lights she looks amazing. As closing time nears and the house lights come on, it slowly dawns on you that the hot girl you were dancing with wasn’t quite the looker you thought she was. What’s that? It’s never happened to you? Oh of course, me neither.

It was quite known from the one picture provided on all order pages that this Horo wasn’t going to be top quality workmanship, and despite that I spent the $125 CAD required for her purchase, because she was Horo. But is she really Horo? Well let me share some objective criticism with you on their choice of design. With breasts that large and a tail that small she really can’t be Horo, Horo’s breasts have been shrinking with each volume of the light novel, not getting larger. One of course could then say this Horo comes from before the novel’s take place so her breasts could be any size and I suppose that’s a fair theory, but I refuse to acknowledge it as truth because of that additional point. Look at her tail? It barely looks like it would go past her knees! Horo’s tail is much bigger than that. Additionally, if you’re going to model after the picture you put on the box, include the furs she’s sleeping with in your design. The key advantage of this for me would be to hide those poorly made breasts that are on Horo’s chest. I can understand the adjusted tail position to make it easier to censor, but the lack of furs is just annoying, it makes her pose seem a bit awkward. Thankfully though, finding the power in my mind to ignore those quibbles, her basic design is rather cute and since those breasts aren’t really visible from most of my viewing angles I can overlook the tails smaller size as well.

Horo’s build quality also suffers from some considerable downsides, she’s definitely not a figure one’s meant to view from a close proximity. While her skin tones are quite good and her hair shaded acceptably well, and even the finish on the skin is acceptable in that it’s luster isn’t overly glossy, the figure overall lacks the care of even Taki Corporation. Yes, I said it, Taki Corp has done one better than Global here in some respects. While I would love Horo to colour my soul, I would prefer her colours not paint me externally, Taki Corps Horo managed to do that quite fine, why not Globals? Global’s Horo passed on some of the darker browns in her hair onto my hand. It could possibly have been some excess as I didn’t see any issue with the figure, but there was no mistaking the colour on my hand. The seams on Horo are overly noticeable, I’m not sure why they couldn’t have hidden them better even the ones in plain sight should have been hidden more. The seam in Horos right arm at her elbow is annoyingly apparent as is the seam in her left arm, and head. I don’t have much more to say about her build quality aside from, what is the base supposed to be, because that’s not wheat.

I feel kind of bad at the moment because I’ve typed nearly 1000 words about this figure and I haven’t really said that many positive things. I’ll give that a shot right now though, I’m sure there’s something good to say about her, she is Horo afterall (or is she?). Oh yes, I’ve got one. Horo’s rump is quite splendid indeed, I was rather taken aback when mine eyes viewed it for the first time. It’s so pleasantly shaped and accentuates her sexy figure remarkably well with her narrow waist. While this isn’t and wont be the viewing angle in which Horo will be presented, it is a very nice angle, in fact her bum is excellent from I think every angle. Hmm… what else is good about this figure, oh it’s Horo, did I mention that? Oh I did? … Well ok I guess the only positive things are Horo’s waist and bum.

However unfortunate the figure may be overall in terms of quality and craftsmanship I’m actually somewhat pleased with it, more so after taking those last few pictures. She was definitely over priced but since the manual labour involved was likely not a modern production line I can understand how the cost would be higher. It’s much like paying someone to paint your garage kit and assemble it for you, in fact it’s entirely like that except it comes straight from the manufacturer. It’s this sort of quality though that makes me generally fear doing something like that, paying a large sum of money for something inferior. This time ’round though I knew what the outcome would be a head of time and did so anyway, and honestly, viewing Horo from a distance she’s quite pleasant. Due to this prior knowledge of quality I don’t have the same hate for this obviously inferior Horo as I do Taki Corps where I felt mislead at the time. I look forward to receiving Globals Horo (A Rest in the Forest Ver.) in the future and comparing the quality between the two, as the pictures provided for both figures by the manufacturer seem to indicate a substantial difference in quality. Here’s hopin’!

MMmm… Horo

  • It’s Horo
  • She’s naked
  • She looks good in the dark
  • She has one good angle (in the light)

  • Very expensive
  • Poor sculpting quality
  • Below average paint quality
  • Barely apparent that this is Horo
  • Ugly base

Give yourself a pat on the back, because you did a great job with the photos in spite of the circumstances! I especially like the cushion/blanket combination — she looks real snug when covered up like that.

But man, that display base is a bloody mystery to me. I’m currently stuck between “giant sponge” and “beach sands”…

    • Aka says:

Haha thanks! I felt I did so as well, very surprised with my results. I kept trying to find a blanket that would have worked better, but that didn’t turn out too bad. I wanted something that was thinner though, could show more of her outline, and have light pass through it. But oh well.

That base is also stupidly heavy for some reason.

  2. Great job with the end photos, but MY GOD light is not her friend. That face is just as you’ve said, it’s like going home with a girl after the party only to notice what she looks like in the morning. LOL

    • Aka says:

Light definitely isn’t her friend. Where I have her on display not much light tends to cross her path and as such she looks quite dandy. But on the sunny days I open my blinds, I fear I’m going to shudder when I see her.

I’ve considered turning her backwards so as to view her bum more as it’s quite well done.

  3. Ashlotte says:

She defiantly benefits from the darkness thats for sure…yikes…

Ah well you knew what you were getting into (Think I’ve poked you enough on that point for this and the other one haha.) so all I can say is grats on proving just how much of a Horo loon you are…I salute you sir! ~_^

*goes back to staring at the silhouette pictures* Mmmm…

  4. Blowfish says:

She actually looks nice in those dark shots and especially with the kinda blue-ish light. How did you achieve that?

I would have never thought that Id read a post in my lifetime where Taki Corporation is somewhat praised. I think I can die now as a happy man.

    • Aka says:

I adjusted the white balance for the ‘wrong’ lighting to get the blue effect.

I feel strange having somewhat praised Taki Corp. After all the hate for the past year and using them as my reference for bad, I go and spend more money on something knowingly worse.

  5. Rajura says:

Agree… her backside is quite pleasing to behold (and in all likelihood to hold). I am particularly fond of her eyes and the smile (from a bit of distance) is very cute… I reall love the innocence of how she is depicted.

I really, really wanna believe that’s wheat, but I gotta agree that ain’t wheat… and if it is, that junk is jacked-up something fierce!

Tail should be longer, but I’ll let it slide!

Nice review… you renewed my commitment to wanting to waste (I mean invest) my money on this one (as well as the others) as soon as the paychecks start coming in!

    • Aka says:

I find it astounding you wish to waste money on this figure as I did. Cudos to you for being a ‘true’ fan like me haha. By which I mean CRAAAZZZYY.

A note on her backside, it was wonderful to behold as well as hold, I can tell you first hand.

  6. Tier says:

OMG. I saw the header picture and I was thinking to myself “Daayum” and then I scrolled down and saw the closeup of the face and I was like “:O!!” Definitely an interesting pickup … I gotta admit, if Taki or some other low-rent off-brand figure manufacturer made a figure of Itsuki Kannagi or Irma, I’d be real tempted to buy it no matter how badly it turned out because I like those characters that much.

It’s funny, I had a song called “Strobelite Honey” running through my head just the other week.

    • Aka says:

Yeah header’s a bit deceiving, she looks pretty decent in low-key/silhouette shots like that where details are hidden.

One of the cooler things about this figure is I’m fairly unique in owning it. Still haven’t found another who’s reviewed her. And that’s a first for me, usually I follow a trend due to when things eventually arrive. Like Black Rock Shooter who only just shipped yesterday.

lol @ Strobelite Honey I’d never heard that song, I just looked it up.

  7. lovelyduckie says:

    WHOA…that face startled me!

“Horo’s breasts have been shrinking with each volume of the light novel, not getting larger.”

Wait…are they really? Or do they just look it? I’ve only seen season 1 of the anime so far. I’m holding off on reading the light novel for now. BUT I am going to read it!

    • Aka says:

Yeah the face… needs some work.

It’s not that any of the material has mentioned her breasts shrinking, it’s just an obervation by us fans. Mainly the fault of Ayakura Jū I think, as Koume Keito who draws the manga has remained thus far consistent with her bust size. Further proof (NSFW).

Regardless I enjoy the artwork, the new pictures are becoming higher and higher quality by the two artists. But I am curious why Ayakura Jū has decided to draw her so flat.

      • Rajura says:

One of the great mysteries of life!

Hopefully, her proper form will be restored in the final LNs and any new artwork. I want her to continue to remain cute and dignified-looking… so nothing unrealistic or excessive!

But seriously, wow… surprisingly, I had not noticed, I guess I’ve just been more focused on her face, tail (shocker huh?), ears, and personality. Other “assets” are a secondary issue, but quite welcome and considered a bonus!

  8. Fabrice says:

    Ah Final set complete!
Well the only one missing that i know of is the Holo/Horo Forest one. you ordered it right?

Global to me is not the best, ill try and not to say worst then that ^^”
Just looking at the face, means that not much effort or whatever is put into it. btw what is she lying on? <.<
bright yellow color….sand is my closest guess

    • Aka says:

I’m also missing the Alpha Max release. I’d also like to pick up a few garage kits if I could ever learn to paint. But yes, I do have the other Global Horo on order as well.

Global is far from the best, they’re far from mediocre, but they’re interesting all the same. So I don’t mind so much, and this Horo while poor up close does have some good traits from afar so it’s not a complete loss. And her bum is splendid.

As for what she’s lying on… I want to say wheat, because she should be lying on wheat… but… your guess is as good as mine.

  9. […] (文倉 十) has been brought into the 3D world by garage kit manufacturer Global. However, like my other Global figure, does this Horo rival Takis? As mentioned in my previous Global review, Global is a small outfit […]

  10. Quazacolt says:

    as i said on TFM:

She’s like the girl you meet in a nightclub, under the seizure inducing flash of strobe lights she looks amazing. As closing time nears and the house lights come on,
Quazacolt: it slowly dawns on you that the hot girl you were dancing with wasn’t quite the looker you thought she was. What’s that? It’s never happened to you? Oh of course, me neither.
    Quazacolt: lold
    * KiddoKid has left the cafe.
Quazacolt: glad i didnt buy. lol

seriously though, almost 1/7 or 1/8 my salary, for something that doesnt even resemble her, yeah. not touching this lol

that said, you still did a good job on the photoshooting attempts and had they use your pictures, it could’ve ‘mislead’ more people into buying 😛

    • Aka says:

I’m still relatively happy to have bought her. Though I wish it was for considerably less. I still like her bum and waist though, and the overall concept of the figure. Too bad…
